Akhila Bharatha Ayyappa Seva Sangham was founded by Dr. P.A. Velayudhan Pillai of Thiruvananthapuram during the year 1945 to service the Ayyappa devotees who undertake arduous journey to Sabarimala. Later it has been-registered as social service organization under the charitable societies Act 12 of 1955.
The Sangham does Yeoman Service to the Sabarimala pilgrims on Free of cost as Furnished below. The sangham provides medicated hot water for drinking, food and shelter for weary, Medicines, and treatment, for diseased. The Sangham Conducts wide range 'annadanam' in all the camps especially at Valiyanavattom and at Sannithanam. It is also operating a well equipped cardiology dispensary at Pampa in association with the Appollo Hospital Madurai. In addition to this the sangham is running a well equipped permanent hospital at Sannithanam with highly qualified Doctors.
The Sangham is helping to re-group the missed devotees during Sabarimala pilgrimage; and also helps to take the deceased devotes to their home by the Sangham Ambulance. The Sangham Volunteers carry the sick, disabled to hospitals or to their home.
The Sangham conducts special free service camps in important centers where the pilgrims congregate at Erumeli,Azhutha,Kallidamkunnu, Inchiparakottah, Puthuserry, Karimala,valiyanavottam,Pamba,Sannithanam,Uppupara,Kottayam Medical College,Kottayam Railway Station,Chengnoor,Pathanamthitta,Pandalam, Ernakulam Railway station etc during the Sabarimala festival season.
Thousands of devoted and teemed well trained volunteers Carry on service duty in all the above camps during the Sabarimala Festival Season.
The Sangham has been also undertaking services at Palani Murugan temple, Thiruppathi - Tirumala temple and in various other important temples in the country.
The Sangham is also running Schools Libraries, Old Age Homes, Hospitals in various places as required by the public, It takes special attention to help the poor people and poor students.It has a large number of big and small temples under the control of its Branches and Unions etc. The Sangham is also having an old age home at Madurai in Tamilnadu.
The Sangham publishes a regular Malayalam Magazine entitled 'Sri Ayyappan' from Thiruvananthapuram and One Tamil Edition 'OM SRI AYYAPPAN' from Madurai to propagate Sanadhana Dharmah among the public.
The above mentioned charitable and humanitarian services are being carried out by the Sangham with in its limited financial resources. The huge expenditure incurred for this has to be metmainly from the generous donations of the devotees.
At present the Sangham is having 4315 Branches, 84 Unions,3 State Councils and 8672 Life Members in the country and abroad.
The Sangham is administered by its President Sri Thennala G.Balakrishna Pillai M.P. and General Secretary Sri N. Velayudham Nair,under the directions of a central working committee of 41 members, who are elected from a central general body of 501 members of the same.
